About us

Meet the Primer Team

We're the people who once stood at a tackle shop counter nodding politely at words we didn't understand. This site is our way of making sure you never have to.

Why this primer exists

Scoopwatreelbantr started on a riverbank in Shropshire, when a friend asked a simple question: "Where do I even begin?" Most of what we found online was written for people who already knew the jargon. So we wrote a four-step course instead, the kind a patient friend would give you.

The name is a nod to three things we love: the scoop of a landing net, the quiet of the water and reel, and the friendly banter that happens on every bank in the world.

We're a small, independent team: a handful of hobby anglers who fish lakes, canals and rivers, plus a retired primary-school teacher who reads every page and sends back anything that wouldn't make sense to a ten-year-old.

How we write

1

Plain words first

Every term is explained the first time it appears, usually with an everyday comparison.

2

Fish come first

We teach gentle handling and catch and release from the very first lesson, not as an afterthought.

3

Truly independent

No sponsored gear, no affiliate links, no paid placements. We'll never tell you which brand to buy.

4

Checked sources

Safety and licence points are checked against the Environment Agency, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Take Me Fishing and Keep Fish Wet.

Ready when you are

Four short lessons, one recap checklist each, and no pressure at all.
